Great class today. I'm so heartened by your column ideas, which run the gamut from business ideas (bring German car production to the U.S.) to sports (has Pete Rose had his dues, for Pete's sake?) to whether student activities fees are being fairly allocated. Lots of great ideas here. For the sake of fairness, here are a couple of other ideas for editorial columns that I've got:
* Should Wittenberg consider including nursing in its curriculum? (This would allow more students to graduate with a very practical degree they can actually use in the real world.)
* Should community service for students be mandated? Can you "make" a student want to serve the community or should it be voluntary? What are the pros and cons?

- I'm late to this blogging thing, but what the heck. This (teaching writing) is the third act of my life. The first was a bizarre stint in a religious commune in the early 70s (which I write about in my memoir, "So Late, So Soon"), the second was my career as a journalist (about 17 years), and finally this mid-life thing as a teacher at a small liberal arts college in Ohio, of all places. I'm married to a sweet man, the mother of a college-aged son, and my life is full of books, animals, young people, and trees.

ReplyDeleteJust wanted to give you a heads up that I posted my mini editorial. I didn't think orginally that it was going to be this challenging. I really enjoyed using the neck of the vase model, although I feel like the rest of the piece is a little newsy rather than opinionated. I feel like I only come in in the last paragraph. I'm a little rusty, but I think that I'll be able to get more in the swing of things as the semster progresses. I don't want to ask you to take the time to read the piece since I didn't have it posted on my blog in time for class, but I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions you could give me. Thanks D'Arcy, and I'll hopefully see you at tonight's meeting.
